Kids Science Experiments - Sugar Lump Matchsticks

Surface Tension Experiment

Sugar Lump Matchsticks

Materials you will need:

• Water
• A Bowl
• A Sugar Cube or Cotton Cloth
• Wooden Matchsticks

Steps:

1.  Fill a bowl with water and place a few matchsticks on top of the water to form a circle.
2.  Slowly dip the sugar cube or cotton cloth into the center of the matchsticks and watch the matchsticks come closer together on the surface of  the water.

In this experiment, the matchsticks come closer together (move in) as the sugar cube or cotton cloth absorb some of  the water and causes an increase in the surface tension..
