Kids Science Experiments - Left vs. Right

Surprising Senses Experiment

Left vs. Right

Materials you will need:

A ball
• Paper
• Toy Bow & Arrow
• Pen
• Scissors
• Ball
• Stairs (optional)
• Plenty of Volunteers

ARE YOU LEFT-Handed or RIGHT-Handed?

Finding out who is right-handed is easier than finding out who is left-handed.  Use this chart to help record your results. To start with, ask your volunteers if they are right-handed or left-handed and write their name in the correct chart.  Record the gender (boy/girl) in the next column.

Now for the fun stuff.

1.)  Ask your volunteers to pick up a pen/pencil and write on a piece of paper.  Record which hand they wrote with.

2.)  Ask your volunteers to pick up a pair of siccors and cut a piece of paper in half.  Record which hand they cut with.

3.)  Ask your volunteer to pick up the bow and arrow and aim for a target on the wall.  Record which eye they kept open to use for their focus.

4.)  Have your volunteer to stand in front of a ball and ask them to kick the ball.  Make sure you have plenty of room and that no breakable objects are in the way. Record which foot they kicked the ball with.

***If left-handed volunteers do three out of four of the above with their left hand, consider them left-handed (many left-handed people are instructed to write with their right hand by parents and teachers so it is a good idea to do more than 3 tasks).

*** Are there more boys than girls who are left-handed or more girls than boys who are left-handed?

There are many other tasks you could choice to have your volunteers to do.  Another good one is to ask your volunteers to stand at the bottom of steps and ask then to walk up the steps.  Record which leg they started off with.
